The Human Centipede (First Sequence)

2010 - 90 mins. - Not Rated
D: Tom Six
C: Dieter Laser, Ashley C. Williams, Ashlynn Yennie, Akihiro Kitamura

A mad surgeon kidnaps innocent, unsuspecting people to use in his experiment of creating a human centipede.

The main selling point behind this film is its special effects involving three people stitched together to form a human centipede. While the effect proves to be quite shocking and grotesque, it starts to lose its value after the effect is shown over and over and over again...... The film is professionally shot and well made on all accounts. The cast serve their roles decently enough turning in credible performances. What they lack is an engaging quality to make viewers care about what is happening to them, despite the horrific situation they have been placed in. What lingers on the mind after viewing the film is not the shocking special effects, but if some psychology into the mind set of it's mad doctor and what drew him to create this experiment had been introduced into the storyline. The doctor simply saying I want to put them together and that I was a respected surgeon, doesn't provide depth. Wouldn't that element of psychology have proved to be much more frightening, much more shocking, much more scary? A film with a gimmick, but no substance behind it.
