BDHR Gets "Down with the Boogey". First Look & Interview with Director Jacob Knapp

I just had the recent pleasure of interviewing director Jacob Knapp about his upcoming horror/comedy Down With The Boogey starring Alex Gasboro, Gary Gustinand Emily CaruthersJust going off the trailer alone, this film definately has some cult potential along the lines of Student Bodies. For those unfamiliar with you, who is Jacob Knapp?

That's a good question. I should have my friends answer that one for me. I know that I love my family and my friends. I always try to to make everyone else happy both in my life and in film. I'm a big horror and comedy buff. I don't know what else to say except... talk and hang out with me to know me?

So you have a movie, Down with the Boogey, that is about to make the film circuit scene. In your own words, what is the the film about?

I'll try my best to sum it up. "Down With The Boogey" is about a being (known as Boogey) taking a terrible character (Jerry) from a terrible romantic comedy called "The Professor" and training him to be a Boogeyman in his own horror film called "Teen Blood".

A night of drinking causes Jerry to miss the first kill in "Teen Blood" and he turns to his second "target" to help him along. In doing that the film starts to derail. Scenes start to happen that shouldn't happen, characters show up that shouldn't show up, actions happen that shouldn't happen...

That's as far as I'll go with it. The thing with it is you're either going to love it or hate it. You can dig into the film to figure it out, but you can still watch it and have fun with it. It doesn't take itself too seriously.

The concept is so original, what was the inspiration behind this film?

The inspiration began one day about eight or nine years ago, I was watching a film called "Cherry Falls". In that film the main character opens a locker and a dead body falls out, like out of the blue. I thought to myself, why would these Boogeymen go through that? Like set a body somewhere knowing that the main character will bump into it. Then I took a nap. While lying there I thought of a short film where a guy is being trained to put a body in a closet to create a scare. I wrote down the idea after I woke up, and kept with it till I had a script. I did like "Cherry Falls" though.

Oh and there was a major inspiration that was in the back of my head while writing it and making it. I'm a really big Looney Tunes fan. There was the one cartoon "Duck Amuck". The one where Daffy is being put in different scenes and costumes he's not comfortable with. That cartoon is just pure genius. I've always wanted to do something like it but not copy it. So I thought, how about doing that with a character in a terrible movie and put him in another genre that he's not comfortable with.

What was your favorite part about making this film?

Meeting some of the greatest people in my life, both from the cast and the crew. This film created some amazing friendships for me that I still have to this day. I absolutely love them and I would do anything that I'm able to for them.

The best day on set was the first night. It was long and brutal as most first nights are, but we had a great time. I'd go into it, but I don't want to bore people hahahha.

So when is the earliest we can be expecting to see the film?

I'm hoping this coming fall. I'll find out once I meet up with the distributor and get a game plan from them.

Has the film been accepted into any film festivals yet?

We haven't entered it into any yet, as we're currently getting the music cleared and getting it polished. I mean it's done, just a few little things to clean up.

Why should people check out Down With The Boogey?

Because it's a fun movie. It's not boring. It's not pretentious. And I believe it's something fresh and new that you don't get to see too much of these days.
