Metamorphosis

2007 - 105 mins. - Rated R
D: Jeno Hodi
C: Christopher Lambert, Irena A. Hoffman, Corey Sevier, Charlie Hollway

While researching the legend of the Blood Countess, in the wilds of the Carpathian Mountains, three young Americans pick up an attractive stranger who turns out be a vampire. As a result of their connection to her, they become prey for another vamp who is out to get revenge.

Metamorphosis, what a fitting title. Could it mean the metamorphosis from human to vampire? Or could it mean the metamorphosis from being a sane person one day and going insane the next due to a person's circumstances? Or could it be the struggle of a person to redeem themselves of their past and turn it into something good? The film's play on the title Metamorphosis is an intriguing one. It draws one in. Unfortunately, actor Christopher Lambert and a bland supporting cast of young actors brings it down, despite some fine Hungarian locales that add to the film's atmosphere and a promising plot. Lambert comes across as unintentionally funny Freddy Krueger or Chucky spitting out one liners. He is all wrong for the role. Watching him, one can't help but recall his days of working on stinkers like Highlander or his campy performance in Mortal Kombat. Lambert is a campy actor and even when he tries to play it straight, he still comes across as campy. Also, bringing this down is some unnecessary CGI effects. Did we really need to see the vampires burst into flames like they did in the TV series Buffy? Just showing these vamps with a stake driven through their heart would have been effective enough. Irena A. Hoffman as a vampire conflicted for her lust for revenge and her love of a tourist brings some much needed sophistication to the film. Her and co-star, Corey Sevier, have a tangible chemistry when on screen together. Unfortunately, this is one time where the cast (excluding Hoffman and Sevier) can be blamed for bringing a movie down. As is, it's watchable, but it could've been oh so much more.
